More Indian tourists visit Sri Lanka

Jul 15, 2011 6:14:02 AM - itnnews.lk

The number of Indians who visited Sri Lanka during the first five months of this year has increased by 54.5 percent. According to Sri Lanka’s Tourism Authority 68,830 Indians had visited the island. It is up 54.5 percent when compared to the same period last year.

British tourists came second with their number growing 7.1 per cent to 41,474 in the period under review. The number of Pakistani tourists increased 98.1 per cent to 6,027. This increase is attributed to the cricket matches that were staged in the island.

Sri Lanka has witnessed an upsurge in tourist arrivals since the end to the armed conflict with the tiger rebels. Around 650,000 tourists arrived in the island last year, and this figure is expected to increase by 100,000 this year.
