Orangeburg County residents are being warned about a couple telephone scams making the rounds there.
One resident was called and told she had been awarded a grant, but had to wire $180 to an account India in order to claim it, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said.
Another person was asked for her bank account information in order to receive a free medical card to supplement her Medicare, Ravenell said.
Callers seeking bank account information or personal information such as a Social Security number or birth date, or requiring payment to secure a prize are most likely scammers, the sheriff said.
