Development of the Kankesanthurai harbour is being accelerated.
The Government has taken the initiative of expanding the harbour so that large ships can enter it for the transport of goods needed by the people of the North and East to minimize congestion at the Colombo harbor. Priority for this harbour was given in the Mahinda Chinthana Extended Version. Work on the first stage of the harbour is already in progress. Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena visited the location yesterday to inspect the prevailing situation at the harbour.
The Government’s intention is to directly transport essential goods which reach the Colombo harbuor directly to the Kankesanthuria harbour. As such, it should be developed so that large vessels can be handled. Six ships which were sunk in the face of terrorist attacks are blocking the entrance to the harbour. As such, large ships cannot enter the Kankesanthurai harbour. Deputy Minister Abeygunawardena said initially these vessels will be removed. With the development of this harbour not only the transport of goods can be expedited but the expenditure incurred can be minimized.
