The Government is prepared to craft a national employment policy. The Cabinet has agreed to appoint a National Steering Committee in this respect.
Senior Minister Dew Gunasekera said the Government’s target was to create a labour market which would suit the demand for the employment growth. Accordingly the National Human Resource and Employment Policy Steering Committee has been appointed. It is headed by Minister Gunasekera. It will formulate a policy framework comprising a strategy and an action plan with the emphasis on employability of educated youth particularly the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level qualified school leavers in mind. The Steering Committee is represented by all the Ministries and State organizations. It is expected to review the private and public industries and services sector, the primary, secondary and higher education sector, vocational training, labour market and agricultural sector, and the tourist industry. Other sectors that have a direct impact on the creation of employment opportunities will also be reviewed.
