The final perahera of the Esala Festival paraded the streets last night. It consisted of 25 elephants, upcountry and low country dancers and cultural items. Banayaka Nilame Shashindra Rajapaksa also marched in the procession. The casket of relics was carried by the tusker named Wasana. The Aadivasis led by Uruwarige Wanniyaletto also participated to perform traditional rituals. Hundreds of thousand of devotees thronged yesterday also to view the Perehera. A special feature was the large numbers who had arrived from the North and the East on a Paada Yathra. All roads that lead to Kataragama were developed and new facilities were provided for the devotees this year. The Annual Esala Festival organized under the guidance of Chief Incumbent of Kiriwehera Dr. Ven. Aluthwewa Soratha Thera and Basnayaka Nilame Shashindra Rajapaksa came to an end after the water cutting ceremony held at the Menik Ganga.
