Inaugural session of Youth Parliament

Jul 16, 2011 11:20:16 AM - itnnews.lk

A rehearsal has been held to raise the voice of the youths in National Politics.

The Inaugural Session of the Youth Parliament was held today. Three hundred and thirty five members of the Youth Parliament participated in the session held at the National Youth Services Centre in Maharagama.  Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and Minister Dallas Alahapperuma also participated in the inaugural session. Three hundred and thirty two members of the Youth Parliament were elected at elections held at the Divisional level. Three members had been appointed to represent the Aadivasis, the disabled and the Burgher community. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet of the Youth Parliament took oaths before Minister Dallas Alahapperuma. Shihan Dhammika Jayasinghe was elected as the Prime Minister and M. Aneesh as the Speaker. The Youth Parliament holds positions of Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Speaker and 13 Portfolios for Ministers and 13 portfolios for Deputy Ministers. The appointments have been made to represent all regions of the country. Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said that strengthening of the democratic political structure is the answer to the absurd allegations made against the country.

Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said that after declaring 2011 as the year of the youth the UN requested from its member countries to carryout such experiments with regard to the youth. He said that the programme carried out on that request has created the largest and the most democratic Parliament compared to Youth Parliaments setup in other countries. The Inaugural debate of the Parliament was held this evening.
