Heat nudging Tropical Storm Bret off S.C. coast

The blazing heat is returning to South Carolina this week, just in time to serve as a shield against weak Tropical Storm Bret.
The tropical storm, which reached named status Sunday night off Florida, grew from the remnants of the system that brought us cooler air last week.
Forecasters expect it will have minimal impact on South Carolina. It’s a compact storm and will pass 300 to 400 miles offshore, according to Mark Malsick, severe weather liaison with the state climate office. Waves along the coast should be only 1 to 3 feet.
A broad ridge of high pressure will move over the state Tuesday, helping keep Bret away but bringing back afternoon temperatures in the high 90s. The reprieve was nice while it lasted. Joey Holleman
