The 27th Sessions of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development opened today under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. The Asian Group on Population and Development has 17 member countries. Addressing the inaugural function, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa emphasized the need for every country to make a direct contribution to the control of population at a time when it has reached seven billion. Higher population growth is a serious challenge to the developed as well as the third world countries. The Speaker said the sessions would give a fine opportunity to look into a strategy needed for population control and development.
Minister Maithripala Sirisena who addressed the session clarified the dedication of the Sri Lankan Government to mould a healthy generation through population management.
Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, President Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Foreign Secretary Karunaratne Amunugama as well as many local and foreign representatives were present.
