A crowd of more than 500 people, many law enforcement officers from numerous state and local agencies, watched Monday as Mark Keel was sworn in as the sixth chief of the State Law Enforcement Division.
"Welcome home, chief," said Gov. Nikki Haley after she delivered the oath of office to him.
In remarks after he was sworn in, Keel referred to SLED's law enforcement role as a "sacred mission." And, he said, "I will be available to you 24/7, 365."
Keel also said, "I hope I can live up to everybody's expectations."
Keel replaces Reggie Lloyd, who had served as head of the state's top law enforcement agency since 2008. Keel had spent his career at SLED before being appointed director of the S.C. Department of Public Safety in 2008.
