Development of many roads in the South gets underway

Reawakening is taking place at Bentara – Elpitiya in the Galle District. The project to carpet roads in the electorate has kicked off.

The carpeting of 310 kilometers of road in the Galle District commenced under the patronage of Minister Basil Rajapaksa. The estimated cost will be 3100 million rupees. The carpeting of more than 37 kilometers of roads in the Bentara – Elpitiya electorate commenced today. It is part of this major project. The cost will be 372.5 million rupees. The carpeting of the alternative road behind the Elpitiya Bus Stand costing 10 million rupees and also the carpeting of the road from Pahala Omantha junction up to Ketapala costing 50.5 million rupees began today. The allocation made by the Economic Development Ministry for provincial road development countrywide is 22 billion rupees. 3740 kilometers of roads are due to be carpeted under this programme.

Minister Rajapaksa has given instructions to the authorities concerned to complete this work before the end of this year. Present at the launch of the development activities were Minister Mervyn Silva and Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva.
