Fishermen Extorted Says UNP MP

Jul 21, 2011 10:01:18 AM - thesundayleader.lk

The UNP has said that fishermen in the Chilaw area are being extorted by some group.

UNP Puttalam District parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara has said a certain group in Chilaw was extorting monies from the fishermen by terrorizing them.

Range Bandara has told parliament that certain government politicians supported this group.

The fishermen have to therefore pay the extortionists and pay three kinds of taxes imposed by the government, he has said.

The parliamentarian has said that monies were being extorted from the fishermen while weighing fish in the market using false weighing scales.

Range Bandara has added that false weighing scales were being used to weigh the fish after locking up a new weighing scale given by a group of fishermen and a priest in the area.

He has called on Fisheries Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne to visit the area and meet the fishermen to resolve the issues.
