Complaints prompt one-day halt to tree trimming

A one-day freeze on pruning trees in downtown neighborhoods in Columbia will take effect at midday today, state officials said.
The state Office of Regulatory Staff arranged for the temporary halt to review the trimming plan, executive director Dukes Scott said.
The stoppage comes after protests from homeowners in neighborhoods like Shandon and Rosewood that the removal of limbs is excessive, leaving many trees in their yards unsightly.
State lawmakers and city officials will meet with SCE&G Friday to discuss changes.Read more in Friday’s editions of The State.
