The administration of 234 Local Councils of the Local Government elections has already been decided.
Elections to 234 Local Councils was held on the 17th of March this year. The United Freedom People’s Alliance succeeded in securing power of 205 Councils. The United National Party won only nine Local Bodies. The power of 12 Local Authorities was secured was the Tamil National Alliance. The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress won four Local Councils and the National Congress two. The Up Country People’s Front and an Independent Group each secured power of one Local Council. A notable feature in the polls held in March was the inability of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna to grab power of any Local Council. The 65 Local Authorities which are going to the polls tomorrow were postponed in March due to legal proceedings and the non-completion of the de-mining process.
