Hot, dry conditions prompt burning ban in 3 S.C counties

Jul 22, 2011 6:41:00 PM - thestate.com
The South Carolina Forestry Commission has banned outdoor burning for three northeastern counties: Georgetown, Horry and Marion counties. A red flag advisory is in effect for the rest of the state, commission spokesman Scott Hawkins said in a statement.

The action was taken because of the “extreme heat and increased fire activity,” Hawkins said.

The burning ban makes out door burning illegal. The red flag alert discourages outdoor burning.

Lexington County, Friday evening, banned outdoor burning "until further notice," a statement said. The county burning ban does not cover fires for cooking for immediate consumption or fires related to forestry management.

Friday afternoon, fire fighters were battling seven uncontrolled wildfires in the state. Some 20 other fires were labeled as contained or controlled.
