Elections for 65 Local Government Bodies ended on a successful note today. Voters in the North as well as in the South displayed a keen enthusiasm.
Voting commenced at 7.00 a.m. today and closed at 4.00 p.m. Polling was held to elect representatives for Local Bodies in about 20 Districts countrywide, including 16 Local Councils in the Jaffna District and three in Kilinochchi. Polls were held for the newly established Kaduwela Municipal Council as well as the Kesbewa Urban Council and the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha in the Colombo District. Our reporters said that there were queues at many polling booths from the morning. Security was ensured in all areas and the necessary climate created for the conduct of a free and a fair poll.
The number of voters eligible to exercise their franchise was more than 2.54 million. Elections for these 65 Local Bodies were earlier postponed due to Court actions and the non-removal of landmines. A notable feature was the conduct of elections in several areas in the North after a lapse of many years. Reports said that all facilities including additional transport was provided in these areas for the people to cast their ballot.
