A set of jeeps obtained under Indian assistance and assigned to the police by the Defence Ministry recently, did not have air-conditioning, police sources said.
475 jeeps were delivered to Sri Lanka with air-conditioners fixed to the vehicles but they were removed at the police garage, sources at police headquarters told The Sunday Leader.
When contacted, police spokesman Priyashantha Jayakody said that the jeeps did not have air-conditioners from the time shipped to Colombo from India.
The police spokesman also noted that police did not require air conditioners in their vehicles for official work.Under the Ministry of Defence a scheme to facilitate islandwide Police mobile patrols with 475 jeeps was started with 137 vehicles being initially distributed earlier this month at the Defence Ministry premises.
