The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has secured a victory in the Local Government polls by winning 45 out of the 65 local government bodies.
Meanwhile the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) has won 18 and the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) has won 2 local government bodies. However, the United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have failed to win a single local government body.
The Local Government polls for 65 institutions which was held yesterday (23 July) ended peacefully without significant incidents being reported. According to the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya, only several minor incidents of election violation were reported and the voter turnout had been at a normal level.
People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) executive director Rohana Hettiarachchi said that the average voter turnout in yesterday’s polls was between 50-60 percent.
Meanwhile, Campaign for Free & Fair Election (CaFFE) said that the percentage of voter turnout was at 55 and that the highest percentage of votes was reported from the Monaragala District.
A total of 5688 candidates, representing 20 political parties and 72 independent groups, had contested in yesterday’s election. In addition 2,570,542 voters had qualified for voting.
