The nation's weather

Jul 25, 2011 1:01:00 AM - thestate.com
One of the hottest spells in decades will linger through much of the East on Sunday. A very slow-moving high pressure system that brought on the heat will continue to push temperatures into the 90s and 100s from eastern Colorado clear to the East Coast.

The heat index values of combined high temperatures and humidity will continue to pose dangers to those prone to heat-related illness, making it feel like the air is as warm as 125 degrees in some areas.

The only thing that may bring relief to the heat on Sunday may be scattered showers and a thunderstorm or two that could pop up from the Central Plains through the Ohio Valley and the Southeast.

In the West, warm temperatures and some possible thunderstorms will greet the Southwest, while dry and warm conditions are expected for the rest of the West. The coolest area of the West will be along the coast as low clouds will keep the area seasonally cool.

Much of the East from the Plains through the Southeast and Northeast will rise into the 90s and 100s, while the Southwest will see similar temperatures.
