A Columbia hotel clerk shot and killed a suspected robber early this morning.
The robber entered the Days Inn at 133 Plumbers Road, near I-20 and Wilson Boulevard, shortly after 6 a.m., Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy Curtis Wilson said. The robber had some type of weapon that he put against the clerk’s throat and then told the woman it was a robbery.
Sheriff’s investigators have not completed their report, so it is unclear what kind of altercation followed. However, the clerk shot the robber in the upper body with a small caliber pistol, Wilson said.
The robber was dead when deputies arrived at the scene, Wilson said. The hotel clerk was taken to Palmetto Health Richland for precautionary treatment of undisclosed, non-life threatening injuries, he said.
The robber’s name has not been released. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department does not release the names of crime victims.
