JVP: Democracy Challenged

Jul 25, 2011 8:58:28 PM - thesundayleader.lk

The JVP says that the government was unable to win the local government elections in the North even after misusing powers and terror tactics.

The party notes that the local government elections that concluded yesterday like the other elections held in recent years was not conducted in a democratic and free and fair manner.

The JVP politburo states that the government has once again managed to win the election without allowing the people to exercise their franchise in a free and fair environment.

The party states that yesterday’s election has once again posed a challenge to the existence of democracy in the country.

“Yesterday’s election results have to be compared with the results of the local government elections held last March 17 where the government acted in an undemocratic manner to win the elections,” the politburo said in a statement.

The JVP has noted that the government used the security forces to win the elections in the North and regardless of the many complains made to the Elections Commissioner and the police, the security forces continued to intimidate and threaten the people and opposition candidates in the North.

“It is interesting to note that the government was unable to win the elections in the North even after using such tactics,” the party stated.

The JVP called on the people to come forward to establish democracy and a new political culture in future.
