The Transport Ministry is currently looking at the possibility of introducing a pre-paid card system for the public transport sector.
The Ministry has said that a detailed study is currently been conducted to explore the possibility of introducing the system by 2013.
Transport Secretary Victor Samaraweera has told the media that the passenger transport unions and transport authorities have expressed their interest in the new system.
He has said that the new pre-paid card system will ensure passengers would get their correct change and also ensure that they make the accurate total revenue.
Samaraweera has added that the system will also be beneficial to bus owners who will be assured that the bus conductors do not engage in fraudulent behavior.
The National Transport Commission (NTC) has been instructed to begin a study on the probable implementation of the new pre-paid system.
