By a 75-33 vote, S.C. House lawmakers approved a new congressional map Tuesday, creating a new 7th Congressional District in the Pee Dee region, anchored by Horry County.
The plan adopted is similar to one previously adopted by the House but rejected by the state Senate.
However, the House is considering other changes to the map.
The final plan adopted by the House will go to the S.C. Senate, where a coalition of Tea Party-affiliated Republicans and Democrats previously adopted a plan calling for the new congressional district, the result of population growth over the last decade, to be anchored in Beaufort County.
Senate leaders, who favor the House plan, are hoping to peel enough Republicans away from that coalition to pass a Pee Dee-Horry 7th District.
