The United National Party (UNP) says that internal conflicts in the party resulted in its defeat at the recently concluded local government elections.
UNP parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera told a press conference that some party members have resorted to criticizing own party members instead of the ruling party creating in an adverse impact among the party membership.
He said party members who had formed cliques within the UNP should reflect and see if they had organized the party in the grassroot level to face the election.
He added that some party members had gone on to give their personal opinion on issues, instead of giving the party’s stance on issues and those who criticized the party should not have done it publicly.
Samaraweera observed that the party members should have resolved issues within the party instead of making public comments.
However, he said that it was now time to unite and work together towards the future.
The party is to decide its future course of action at the next working committee meeting scheduled for August 17.
