The Government is successfully purchasing paddy from farmers of the Hambantota District.
It has mooted a special programme to purchase the Yala paddy yield from the peasants. Accordingly agents were appointed to every District to look into the purchasing of paddy. All paddy storage facilities in Hambantota have also been opened. Harvesting of paddy cultivated in about 25 thousand acres under the Lunugamvehera Scheme has commenced. The farmers are bringing their yields to storage facilities at Pannegamuwa, Weerawila and Pallemalala.
The Government purchases a kilo of paddy for 28 rupees. The cultivators in Hambantota have praised the mediation of the Government in directing their produce to the market without incurring any obstacles.
