Saxophonist Skipp Pearson
underwent quadruple bypass surgery Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The heart surgery was scheduled two months ago, much to the surprise of some who saw Pearson perform recently.
“We didn’t want to alarm the public,” Shirley Martin
, executive director of the Skipp Pearson Jazz Foundation, said when asked why the procedure was kept secret.
Pearson, who holds a weekly Thursday-night residency at Hunter-Gatherer, performed last week without any mention of his impending surgery.
Martin said Pearson is no longer using a breathing ventilator and is in stable condition. He could be released from the hospital as early as Sunday, depending on his response to the surgery, she added.
