An estate sector trade union affiliated to the government has accused estate sector employers of violating the new collective agreement signed between the employers and estate trade unions.
Senior member of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) and deputy minister Muttu Sivalingam has told the media that some employers have violated the agreement reached on the daily targets of the estate sector workers.
The new collective agreement has increased the daily collection target of estate sector workers from 16 kilos to 20 kilos.
However, Sivalingam has said that some employers have increased this daily target in an arbitrary manner.
The deputy minister has said that a discussion should be held between the employers and workers’ associations before implementing such a decision.
Sivalingam has added that such unilateral decisions by employers would create unrest in the estate sector.
