The government has launched a programme to remove coconut trees that are affected by the disease that causes the leaves to wither.

Minister Jagath Pushpakuara said that relief will be provided to those who lose their income. The Minister said that decreasing the harvest gradually is characteristic of the disease. He said if the disease will spread outside Weligama, it will be difficult contain. So far 340,000 trees which amount to zero point five percent have been identified. The Minister expressed these views at the 17th Annual General Meeting of Sri Lanka Coconut Growers Association held in the BMICH. Parliamentarian Sudharshani Fernandopulle and Secretary to the Coconut Development and Janatha Estate Development Ministry Anura Siriwardena participated in the occasion.
