Jul 30, 2011 12:06:48 PM - itnnews.lk

The Fisheries Harbour in Valachchena has been vested in the public.

The Government renovated the Valachchena Fisheries harbour which was destroyed due to terrorist activities. It was developed under the North Eastern Development Programme at the expenditure of 400 million rupees. The Asian Development Bank has provided funds for the renovation. Minister Basil Rajapaksa was the chief guest at the occasion. The Minister said that Eastern Province is leading the paddy producing regions of the country. It is also producing the highest fish harvests.  There are many reservoirs in the East where fresh water fisheries industry can be developed. It is also an area where tourism can be promoted. He said that the Eastern Province is setting an example for the other regions of the country with regard to development.

The renovation of the Valachchena Fisheries Harbour has provided relief to the fishermen in the East. The lack of a fisheries harbour between Kirinda and Trincomalee during the past was considered a shortage. The project was carried out by the Fisheries Harbour Corporation. Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Rauff Hakeem, Deputy Ministers Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan, M.L.A.M. Hisbullah and Chief Minster of Eastern Province Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan participated in the occasion.
