News editor of the Uthayan newspaper Gnasundaram Kuganathan (55) who was assaulted on Friday evening in Jaffna is in critical condition at the Jaffna hospital, the Uthayan staff told The Sunday Leader.
A journalist at the newspaper said that the attack took place just as the news editor was returning home from work late on Friday evening.
Two men on a motorbike carried out the attack near the home of the journalist. The men assaulted Kuganathan and then got back on the motorbike and fled, the journalist said.
Kuganathan was also believed to have been the target during the worst attack on the paper on May 2, 2006, a day before World Press Freedom day.
In that incident alone two Uthayan employees were killed and two wounded. The wounded are now permanently maimed. In that incident a gang intruded into the Uthayan office, called for the chief reporter and opened fire at random causing deaths, injuries and damage to property.
