Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has said that treacherous propaganda of channel 4 is false. Their sole purpose was to discredit Sri Lanka and disrupt the peace prevailing in the island. The Defence Secretary launching the Defence Ministry Report on “Humanitarian Mission Factual Analysis” today also responded to allegations of Channel 4. The Defence Secretary said that overseas LTTE network and the Tamil Diaspora are working hard to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka. Questioning the credibility of allegations raised by the recent Channel 4 video which he vehemently rejected as “malign and absurd accusations”, the Secretary asked, “Why should the government, which directly looked after the family of LTTE leaders, kill those who surrendered to the military?” He noted that the rump of the LTTE is in an attempt to discredit Sri Lanka and disrupt the prevailing peace in the country.

Just like its recent so-called documentary, this continuing serial by Channel 4 simply promotes baseless accusations whose sole purpose is to discredit Sri Lanka. It is an attempt to tarnish this country’s image and divide our people. It is an attempt to set back the peace that has been won after three painful decades. Mr. Rajapaksa emphasized that this was not reportage; it is propaganda. That supposedly respectable media channels are complicit in the separatist agenda is extremely disturbing. At a time when the media establishment in the UK is under heavy fire and is drawing the attention of British authorities for its lack of ethics, it seems Channel 4 is no exception. He noted that the false claims and allegations made by Tamil Diaspora together with the LTTE international network will be laid to rest with the release of the factual analysis reports,

The Defence Secretary released in Colombo today, the Report compiled by the Defence Ministry analyzing the facts of the final years of the humanitarian operations against the terrorists in the presence of foreign diplomats as well as a large group of local and foreign statesmen. First copies of the book were presented to Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, Chief of Defence Staff and Chiefs of the Armed Forces. Video footage responding to allegations of Channel 4 was also released on the occasion Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris delivered the keynote address. The Government has made arrangements to take to the global community via this effort the book and the video footage which clearly showcase the real situation of the humanitarian operation.
