President Rajapaksa has underscored that it the Local Government Councils which vested with the prime task of meeting the aspirations of the people. The President was addressing the Local Government heads.
Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen elected to the 45 Local Councils which were won by the United People’s Freedom Alliance at the recently concluded elections took their oaths before the President. The ceremony was held at Temple Trees. Further addressing them, the President said that the victories of elections held so far explicitly displays the trust placed by the people in the Government.
The President said that the people have given the Government a massive mandate. They have placed confidence in the Government. From 2005, the Government gradually advanced step by step but did not go back. Everyone had the obligation to safeguard this trust and confidence. The people cast the vote with many aspirations. This should not be forgotten.
The President told them that all their actions had an impact on the Government and personally on him. Financial assistance which had hitherto not been provided to Local Bodies had been given for the institutions to work. This helped to discharge a major part of the work in the villages. As such the President said that full trust had been placed on them. The people have also placed trust on them. Everyone was carefully monitoring their work. The President emphasized that the Local Councils and Provincial Councils should work in collaboration. He advised them to work in unity and move forward.
The Local Authority members are the Government representatives who have direct links with the people. The President reminded the newly appointed Chiefs of the Local Councils that they have more opportunities of getting directly involved with the mega development programmes that are mooted at present within the country, while safeguarding the image of the administration.
Giving his views on this occasion General Secretary of the Freedom Alliance and Minister Susil Premajayantha mentioned that of the 299 Local Councils to which elections were held, the Freedom Alliance succeeded in securing power of 250 Authorities. He pointed out that this was the first time that a Government in power had been able to secure the administration of such a large number of Local Councils. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, leaders of political parties which contested the polls with the Freedom Alliance Cabinet Ministers, Parliamentarians and Ministry Secretaries were among those present on the occasion.
