New tropical system forming

South Carolinians know the drill: When August rolls around, you start paying attention to the tropics. And on cue, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday that a low pressure system off the Lesser Antilles August is likely to become Tropical Storm Emily.
South Carolina residents need to pay attention because the computer models have it curving to the north over the next few days, and the intensity models forecast it growing into a Category 1 hurricane.
The system is a week away from any threat to the state, and it could curve northeast into the open Atlantic like so many storms have over the past two years under similar circumstances. Regardless, this week would be a good time for coastal residents to check on their emergency kits. Joey Holleman
