Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka assures that despite the shortfall in the country’s power supply, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) would prevent power cuts.
Ranawaka says there is currently a shortfall of 15MW of power to provide a round the clock service.
Speaking during an event in Anamaduwa, the Minister has said the country has to generate an additional 700GW hours every year to meet the rising power demand.
He has said the CEB had managed to prevent power cuts even though there was a severe drought after the heavy rains experienced in the first few months of 2011.
According to Ranawaka, the hydro power generation in the country has declined to one third of the normal generation capacity.
