A motorist driving through a Rosewood neighborhood this morning found a toddler wandering alone down a street.
The driver called the Columbia Police Department shortly after 9 a.m. and then waited with the child on Tyler Street, said Jennifer Timmons, a spokeswoman for the department.
As police canvassed the street to look for the child’s parents, one neighbor pointed to the child’s house on the 600 block of Tyler Street. There, police found the front and back doors open and no one inside, Timmons said.
While police were searching the house, the mother rode up on the back of a moped driven by a male companion, Timmons said. The mother told police they had left the child at home while they went to a store.
The 3-year-old girl was barefoot and wearing pants but no top, Timmons said. The child was unharmed but is in the custody of S.C. Department of Social Services caseworkers.
