The Kandy Esala Perahera Festival has begun. The first Kumbal Perahera will parade the streets tomorrow.
The Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa Pradeep Nilanga Dela has said that plans have been drawn up for the conduct of the Perahera on a grand scale giving pride of place to ancient traditions. Facilities will be available for those who flock to Kandy to view the Perahera. The elephants that will participate in the Perahera are being brought to Kandy.
In the meantime the Kandy District Secretary Gamini Seneviratne said that all wine stores and meat shops within three kilometers from the Kandy City will be kept closed from tomorrow until the 14th of this month. A massive crowd is expected to view the Perahera this time.
