Services for civil-rights icon set for today

Aug 4, 2011 7:59:00 AM - thestate.com
Hundreds of political leaders, judges, lawyers and ordinary South Carolinians are expected to gather today to honor the late Judge Matthew J. Perry Jr., a civil-rights lawyer and jurist who led the legal fight to overturn segregation in South Carolina and earned a place as one of the state’s transformational political figures.

The 11 a.m. funeral at Brookland Baptist Church will include a eulogy by the Rev. Charles B. Jackson Sr., Brookland’s senior pastor, and tributes from seven South Carolina leaders who were influenced by Perry.

Gov. Nikki Haley has ordered flags at the State House to be lowered to half-staff today, her spokesman Rob Godfrey said.

Perry, whose life was characterized by hard work, sharp intellect and a keen sense of justice, died Friday at age 89, apparently of natural causes.

Perry, who would have turned 90 Wednesday, still maintained a rigorous work schedule as a senior U.S. District Court judge, working on the day of his death.
