The Elections Secretariat has announced that polls for the remaining 23 Local Government Institutions will be held on or before the 17th of October. The relevant Gazette Notification was due to be released today. The Department of Elections said nominations for these Local Bodies will be accepted between the 18th and the 25th of this month. The Elections Secretariat said that the Assistant Elections Commissioners have already been apprised of to be ready for the holding of the polls. The 23 Local Councils include 17 Municipal Councils, one Urban Council and five Pradeshiya Sabhas.
The Municipal Councils are located in Colombo, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Moratuwa, Negombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Galle. Polls will also be conducted for the Matara, Hambantota, Kalmunai, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Badulla and Ratnapura Municipal Councils. The only Urban Council for which polls are due is Kolonnawa. Elections will be conducted for the Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa, Kandy – Kadawathsathara Gangawata-Korale, Suriyawewa, Hambantota and Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabhas.
