President Rajapaksa has given instructions to officials to take action to introduce paddy varieties which has a high demand in the market.
The President said that although paddy is cultivated countrywide, cultivators encounter difficulties in marketing their produce as it did not match with the market demand. As a solution to curbing the hardships encountered by paddy cultivators, it is important to introduce paddy variants which would suit the requirements of the consumer market. The President was addressing a meeting of officials of Departments coming under the Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock, Environment, Agrarian, Wildlife, Irrigation, Water Management and Economic Development. The meeting was held at Temple Trees.
Views were expressed with regard to powers needed for the solution of problems of each department. Clarifications were made on the simple strategies that should be adhered to in using the required powers. Responding to queries made by officials of the Environment and Agriculture Ministries, the President emphasized the need to immediately halt constructions in catchment areas. Also the President issued instructions to the officials to moot an immediate programme to overcome problems encountered in the disposal of garbage in urban areas.
