Jury selection and opening statements are expected later Monday in the trial of a 15-year-old former Socastee High School student on charges he shot at a school resource officer and took pipe bombs to the school in September.
Christian Helms will be tried as an adult on charges of attempted murder and three counts of transporting or possessing components of a destructive device. If convicted, Helms faces up to 30 years in prison on the charges.
A grand jury indicted Helms on the charges in June, three months after a family court judge ruled that the teen would face the charges as an adult.
Police say the teen, who was then 14, went into the office of Erik Karney, Socastee Highs school resource officer, on Sept. 21 with a loaded gun and the two pipe bombs in his backpack.
Police say Helms shot at Karney while talking with him inside his office at the school.
