Environment Minister Anura Priyadhrashana Yapa and the Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake have halted construction work on a hydro power plant on the Mahaweli River at Getambe.
The project has been halted following protests from environmentalists and residents in the area.
Environmentalists and residents have complained that the blasts on the center of Mahaweli River at Getambe have created cracks on houses on both hills on either side of the river.
The construction work has also threatened the endemic fish in that particular part of the river.
Yapa had asked the worksite supervisor following an inspection tour to inform his superiors that work on the plant should be halted until a committee decides on the project.
