The first Randoli Perahera of the historic Kandy Esala Festival takes to the streets.
The first Randoli Perahera paraded the streets last night and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa joined in viewing the Perahera. The Randoli Perahera commenced at the auspicious time of 7.55 p.m.and wended its way through the Dalada Veediya, D.S. Senanayake Veediya, Temple Road, Colombo Street, E.L. Senanayake Veediya and returned to the Maligawa via Cross Street and Raja Veediya. There were many colourful features in the Perahera of the Sri Dalada Maligawa as well as the Four Devala Peraheras.
The relics casket was carried by the tusker “Indiraja.” The Kataragama Wasana and Wewaladeniye Raja also joined in the Perahera. Large crowds thronged the Kandy City with the intention of having a glimpse of this procession. The Kandy Esala Perahera is Sri Lanka’s biggest Buddhist Festival . It is an annual event organized in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relics, enshrined at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy
