The 4-year-old son of a Richland County Sheriff Deputy is in critical but stable condition following an accidental shooting involving a personal weapon owned by the unnamed deputy.
According to Sheriff Leon Lott, the shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning as the deputy was getting ready for work.
The deputy had laid out his clothes and equipment for work and stepped into the bathroom when the child apparently shot himself, Sheriffs Department spokesman Curtis Wilson said.
When he heard the gunshot, the deputy returned to his bedroom to find his son lying on the floor, shot in the upper body. The boy was taken to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Calling the accident unfortunate and a tragic situation, Lott said each deputy is issued a gun safety lock box for storing their service revolver at home. The gun involved in the incident, however, was not the deputys service duty weapon.
