The UNP says that crucial decisions would be made at the next Working Committee of the party scheduled for August 17.
The Working Committee is to also discuss the forthcoming local government elections and the party’s nominations for it.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake says that internal conflicts in the party would lead to a disastrous situation if not resolved immediately.
He said the party has failed to live up to the people’s expectations while the entire opposition in the country had failed to come together as a joint force at the required time.
He reiterated that the internal conflicts in the party had also contributed to the failure in the opposition.
Attanayake observed that the criticism leveled against the party leadership by some party members would be discussed at the next Working Committee meeting.
Citing the break-away of former Ministers Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake from the party, Attanayake observed that punishing the people who have raised issues would be harmful to the party.
