Vehicles’ catalytic converters being stolen in Richland County

Aug 10, 2011 10:10:00 AM - thestate.com
A thief or thieves is targeting unsecured vehicles, primarily parked overnight at Richland County businesses, to steal expensive exhaust components called catalytic converters.

The converters can be quite valuable – those taken in the string of thefts between July 29 and Aug. 4 range in value from $400 to $1,000 – and play a key role in pollution control for the vehicles.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department reports that converters have been stolen from the following locations:

• Carolina Air & Water, 1051 Old Garners Ferry Road, between 5 p.m. July 29 and 10 a.m. Aug. 1, where someone took a catalytic converter worth $400 from a vehicle;

• Interstate Transportation Inc., 2511 Trotter Road, between 6 p.m. Aug. 5 and 7 a.m. Aug. 8, where someone stole 15 catalytic converters from vehicles worth $15,000, and caused $200 worth of damage to a fence;
