The country’s unemployment rate in the first quarter for this year was reported as 4.3 percent in comparison to 5.0 percent in the first quarter of last year.
According to the figures released by the Department of Census and Statistics, the total number of employed persons in Sri Lanka in the first quarter of this year was estimated at about 7.8 million. Of this about 42.7 percent were engaged in services sector, 32.3 percent in the agriculture sector, and 25.1 percent in the industrial sector.
The distribution of labour force participation rate by age group and by sex depicts more male participation compared to female in all age groups.
Overall unemployment rate reported for females was 6.7 percent and it was 3.0 percent for males.
