The Beijing Foreign Languages School at the Beijing Foreign Studies University has conferred an Honorary Doctorate on President Rajapaksa.
The President was conferred the Honorary Doctorate when he visited the University to declare open the Sri Lanka Education Centre at the University during his 4 day official tour of China. The Beijing International Studies University commemorates its 70th Anniversary while the Sinhala Language Education Unit established under the Asian – African Languages School at the University commemorates its 50th Anniversary. The President was the Chief Guest at a ceremony held in this respect.
Chinese students will be able to study the Sinhala Language and Sri Lankan Culture at the Centre following the opening of the Sri Lanka Education Centre. It Chairmanship was offered to the President and he planted a tree to mark the occasion.
A significant point of note of this occasion was that it took place during the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Beijing Foreign Studies University and the 50th Anniversary of the Sinhala Language teaching unit at the University.
Addressing the event President Rajapaksa said Sri Lanka could learn many things from China. He pointed out that China had proven to the entire world that a country can obtain economic growth only through the unity of its people.
Meanwhile, the President is scheduled to meet the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao later today.
