Investigations are in progress into the arson attack by an unknown group on the historical Cool Palace which is considered to have been used by King Parakramabahu the Great as the leisure residence in the 13th century. The probe is jointly being carried out by the Archaeological Unit of Polonnaruwa and the Police. Initial inquiries have revealed that a group of saboteurs which had entered the premises had launched this arson attack. The Archaeological Unit said that grass and trees on the islet have been damaged in addition to the base of the Palace and ancient bricks. The historical Cool Palace which is located in the middle of the Parakrama Samudra and is normally submerged is exposed due to the waters of the tank receding as a result of the prevailing drought in the region.
The Department of Archaeology will carryout extensive restoration work immediately to repair the damage caused by the fire. This palace is located on an islet in Parakrama Samudra in Polonnaruwa.
