Members of the Civil Defence Force who protected the villages from the terrorists are geared to make a vital contribution to economic development. Director General of the Civil Defence Department Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris said that several such projects are already being successfully implemented. Rear Admiral Peiris said that they had earned 74.43 million rupees. Next year they planned to earn more with the Department taking to many activities in fields related to agriculture and the production of bricks and further advance.
The Chief of the Civil Defence Force was speaking at a ceremony held to hand over tractors purchased from profits earned from these projects to the Force. The handing over took place at the Galle Face Green under the patronage of Army Commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya. 20 tractors and six land master tractors were handed over to the Civil Defence Force members who gained this profit from various agricultural endeavours.
