All unlicensed hotels and eateries within the Colombo Municipal Council limit have been given a time limit to get licensed before 31st of this month. The Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council said that it has decided to take legal action against all unlicensed hotels after this date.
As a rule, all hotels within the Colombo Municipal Council limit are required to obtain licenses before 1st of January each year. Although there are about 550 hotels within the Colombo municipal limits only 225 restaurants have obtained licenses.
Officials of the Health Department said that in the issuance of licenses the council takes into consideration several matters. The location of the hotel, its services, health conditions of its servants, water supply, and the standard of food being served are the main considerations looked into in this regard. The servants of the hotel should also appear for the examinations prescribed by the Health Officers.
The Officials of the Health Department says that due to partaking of food in substandard hotels complaints have been received from consumers that they get subjected to various common diseases.(niz)
