The all island elephant census is being carried out from today.
The census will be held till tomorrow. The Wildlife Conservation Department said that the census is being carried out in 1553 centres in North Western and Central areas of Mahaweli, Southern and Eastern areas of Yala and Bundala wildlife zones which will be closed to the public. It is being carried out with assistance from Wildlife Conservation Department, University students, officials, NGOs and Security Forces. The Department said that the aim is to collect extensive data about the elephant population in the country.
